Joint, Shoulder, Knee and Extremity Pain

Man holding leg in pain with doctors

Are you suffering from pain in your shoulders, knees, arms, legs, or hand?

When you come in for pain management in New York City, our dedicated team of doctors can help you to learn more about why you have pain or limited movement, what can be done, and what your long-term outlook is. Many people suffer from joint-related pain including pain in the arms, hands, legs, ankles, knees, and shoulders. This type of pain may be debilitating or a constant ache that doesn’t seem to go away. It’s important not to delay in getting help for shoulder and knee pain. Doing so can lead to worsening symptoms and perhaps permanent limitations on your mobility. At Rehabilitation Medicine Center of New York, our goal is to ensure you always get exceptional attention to any pain you may have.

When Should You See a Doctor for Shoulder, Knee, or Extremity Pain?

Whether you’ve been in a car accident, fell at work, got hurt playing a sport, or just developed a chronic ache, our team can help you. Come in to see us whenever you have pain. This is your brain’s way of telling you to seek out medical care. While strains of the muscles and joints are not uncommon, proper care is always necessary no matter the severity. We recommend seeking out a pain management doctor in NYC whenever you are struggling with pain that is severe, limits your movement, is chronic, or that is interfering with the quality of your life.

It’s important to know what’s causing your pain. Once that’s understood, holistic and other treatment options can provide you with the relief you need. Our team is available to discuss any pain you have in your joints, bones, ligaments, muscles, tendons, or nerves. Don’t put off getting the help you need any longer.

Rehabilitation Medicine Center of New York treats pain in the shoulders, knees, arms, hands, legs, ankles, and feet.  Bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves are the structural components of these body parts that work together.

  • Joints are made up of bones, cartilage and ligaments.
  • Joint surfaces are covered in cartilage for friction-free movement.
  • Ligaments attach to bones and help stabilize joints.
  • Nerves transmit messages from the brain telling muscle to contract or relax.
  • Muscle moves the body’s joints.
  • Nerves also send pain signals.

Aging, daily wear and tear, repetitive overuse and injury can cause pain to develop.  A spinal problem in the neck (Cervical Radiculopathy) can contribute to shoulder and arm pain.  A low back disorder can cause symptoms in the legs (Sciatica).  Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) can affect bones, joints and muscles and causes pain.  RSD is a type of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

Diagnostic examination

Diagnostic evaluation is necessary to determine the cause of pain and symptoms.  Even if the cause is obvious, a physical and neurological examination is essential. One of our doctors will combine information learned about your general health, lifestyle, past medical history, and symptoms with imaging or other test results to confirm your diagnosis.

Questions our Doctors may ask include:

  • When did pain and symptoms start?
  • Did a particular event precede pain?
  • Have your symptoms improved or worsened?
  • Does pain radiate into another part of your body?
  • On a scale of zero (no pain) to 10 (agony), what is your current pain level?
  • How does your condition affect your ability to work or perform ordinary activities of daily life?
  • Do pain and symptoms disrupt your sleep?
  • Other questions specifically related to you and your symptoms.

We Understand Your Pain

  • You—your pain, expectations and treatment goals.
  • Precise diagnosis—our doctors specialize in precision diagnostics.  An accurate diagnosis is the first step to an effective and efficient treatment plan.
  • Provide patient-friendly educational materials, including illustrative videos to help you learn about spinal anatomy, conditions and treatments.
  • Interventional pain management.  Instead of masking pain, we “intervene” to stop and manage pain while you heal.
  • Functional rehabilitation.  Physical therapy helps you regain and build flexibility, strength and endurance.
  • Be available to answer all your questions and address each concern.
